Back to School: Nurturing Faith from the Crib to Kinder

Hey Reader!

One of the beautiful things about spiritual formation in early childhood is that it happens through repetition, relationships, and routines—not just formal Bible lessons and chapel. Here are two practical, developmentally appropriate ideas for each age group:

INFANTS (0-12 months)

  1. Blessing Time – As you rock, feed, or soothe a baby, quietly pray over them: "God, thank You for Emma. Help her grow strong and know You love her." Gentle repetition builds an atmosphere of love and security.
  2. Songs of God's Love – Sing simple songs like Jesus Loves Me, This Little Light of Mine, or a personalized version of "God made ___." Even before children understand the words, they experience God's love through your voice.

TODDLERS (12-24 months)

  1. God Made It Walk – Take short nature walks pointing to flowers, birds, clouds, and trees. Repeatedly say, "God made the birds!" "God made the flowers!" Keep the language simple and joyful.
  2. Prayer Motions – Teach children to fold hands, bow heads, and say short echo prayers: "Thank You, God...for my family...Amen." Movement helps young toddlers participate.

TWOS

  1. Bible Story Basket – Introduce one simple Bible story each week using toy animals, dolls, or felt pieces. Let children retell Noah's Ark or Jesus calming the storm through play.
  2. Kindness Catchers – Celebrate kind actions by saying, "You shared your toy! That shows God's love." Connect everyday behavior to loving others as Jesus loves us.

THREES

  1. Scripture With Motions – Memorize one short verse each month using actions. Example: "Be kind to one another" (Ephesians 4:32) with simple hand motions.
  2. Prayer Jar – Let children draw a name or picture from a jar each day and pray one sentence for that person. This teaches that prayer is a natural conversation with God.

FOURS

  1. Creation Detectives – Give children a challenge during outdoor play: "Can you find three things God made that are amazing?" Come together to share discoveries and thank God for His creation.
  2. Bible Drama – Invite children to act out stories using simple costumes and props. Dramatic play helps Bible stories come alive.

FIVES

  1. Wonder Journals – After a Bible story or nature walk, invite children to draw something that reminds them of God and dictate one sentence about it. This encourages reflection and conversation.
  2. Living the Verse Challenge – Choose one monthly verse, such as "Love one another" (John 13:34). Throughout the week, challenge children to find real-life ways to live it out and celebrate those moments together.

Across All Ages

No matter the age, children grow spiritually when they consistently experience these four things:

  • They hear God's Word through stories and Scripture.
  • They talk with God through simple, authentic prayer.
  • They see God's love modeled by caring adults.
  • They practice loving others through everyday acts of kindness.

The goal isn't simply to teach children about God. It's to help them begin experiencing a relationship with Him through the rhythms of everyday classroom life. Those small, consistent moments often leave the deepest spiritual roots.
