Try These 3 Fun Teaching Tips To Make Scripture Stick 🎶

Hey Reader!

Here are three tips for effectively teaching scripture to young children in ways that will stick long after they leave our classrooms.

  1. Put the words to a beat – a chant or simple melody works great!
  2. Add some movement – either simple sign language or body movements, or a stomping or clapping to the beat in tip #1.
  3. Add some vocal inflection – this means you’re raising and lowering your voice (the pitch) in memorable ways. Even if you can’t carry a tune, you can move your voice!

Why does this work?

  1. Each of these tips activates different parts of the brain. When our brain is more active, creating synapses across the hemispheres and within multiple areas of the brain, the memories are solidified better than simple language repetition (drills). The brain creates more of a spider web of connections rather than just a single pathway!
  2. God protects the worship centers of our brain – it’s why people with dementia still often connect with music/melody even when they don’t connect with anyone else. Check out THIS touching video of a woman remembering how much Jesus Loves Her.
  3. Joy in community strengthens memory. It’s fun AND we’re doing it with our friends.

So what?

While children often don’t understand the full meaning behind all the words just yet, God will accomplish what He desires in His timing. Our job is to put the Word in their hearts and minds. God’s word is powerful and effective. It accomplishes what He wants it to accomplish…every time.

Isaiah 55:10-11

The rain and the snow

come down from the sky.

They do not return to it

without watering the earth.

They make plants come up and grow.

The plants produce seeds for farmers.

They also produce food for people to eat.

The words I speak are like that.

They will not return to me without producing results.

They will accomplish what I want them to.

They will do exactly what I sent them to do.
